According to an entry on the Coquille Police log for Thursday, June 27, 1:10 p.m., W. Central & Hwy. 42, "result of traffic stop," 38-year old Viva Mathieson arrested on DNSO warrant charging Probation Violation and transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille.
According to an entry on the Coquille Police log for Friday, June 28, 3:15 p.m., 400 No. Central, McKay's, "result of follow up," 24-year old Kayla Zumwalt arrested on charges of ID Theft and Theft II. Transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille.
According to an entry on the Coquille Police log for Saturday, June 29, 11:07 p.m., 1100 block No. Knott St., 55-year old female reported "burglary." On the CBPD log, 9:33 a.m., 500 block Johnson, 31-year old male reported "cold burglary."
He told the Oregon State Police trooper that he was en route to a softball game when he was pulled over in a black Land Rover on Hwy. 101, June 19 at 7:56 p.m. According to an OSP report, "detectives were following the subject as he traveled northbound on US Hwy. 101. The subject exhibited poor driving and was unable to maintain a single lane of travel." A state trooper responded and came upon the vehicle at milepost 239. A traffic stop was initiated. Twenty-five year old Ernest Edwin Garrett III, of Bandon, admitted he was suspended from driving and contributed his poor driving to the vehicle's front suspension, missing lug nut and the fact that he was distracted by his IPOD. "It was determined that the subject was not impaired." Garrett was cited for Failure to Return a Suspended or Revoked Driver's License, and cited for DWS-Violation, Driving Uninsured, Failure to File a SR 22, and Operation of an Unsafe Vehicle. He was warned for Failure to Maintain a Single Lane of Travel. The vehicle was parked and the subject called for a ride to the softball game.
Hit & Run
A 59-year old Bandon female stated she swerved her gray Honda CRV June 20, 11:42 p.m. to avoid a deer in a roadway before she struck a highway fog marker and several mailboxes on an eastbound shoulder. According to an OSP report, Jennifer Kay Cleeton "did not stop or notify emergency personnel of the crash or property damage." A Bandon Police officer located the vehicle's front bumper assembly and attached license plate at the accident scene. Cleeton was located at her residence where she was issued a criminal citation charging Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver.
A Domestic Assault investigation June 21, 8:53 a.m., on Roy Road in Coos Bay, led to drug charges. According to an OSP report, a Coos Co. Sheriff's deputy was already on the scene when a state trooper arrived. Thirty-one year old Gerald Joseph Davison was arrested and transported to the county jail at Coquille on a Harassment - Domestic charge. A 22-year old female victim, Danielle Malinda Davison, remained on the scene along with two children, one 10-months old and the other three years old. "Due to exhibited signs of recent illegal drug use, statements made by the victim, and the presence of small children, I requested and was given permission to search the residence." The trooper located multiple pieces of drug paraphernalia, illegal prescription drugs, and two small marijuana plants that were being cultivated. DHS - Child Welfare was summoned. "A family friend took care of the children while the residence was made fit for the children. Drug related charges, including PCS - Schedule III, MCS - Marijuana, and Endangering the Welfare of a Minor will be referred to the Coos County DA for charging consideration."
A valid arrest warrant out of Curry Co. was located by an OSP trooper after he contacted a 27-year old male outside of Walmart, in Coos Bay, June 21, 10:38 p.m. According to an OSP report, Leon Luck was wanted for Failure to Appear on Burglary I and Theft I charges. He was taken into custody, but denied a search of his backpack. During transport to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille, Luck "admitted to the presence of illegal drugs in his backpack." The trooper located a "rinse baggie, a used syringe and a loaded syringe." He was lodged in the jail on the warrant, while a "charge of Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine will be referred to the DA's office."
Hit & Run
Scuff marks left on the pavement at the scene of a hit and run June 23, 5:13 p.m., led to a suspect's home. According to an OSP report, "the northbound operator of a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup drove over the curb and struck the concrete barrier on the north end of the Isthmus Slough Bridge" in Coos Bay. "The crash sheared the right front wheel off of the Silverado. The operator continued driving approximately one half mile to his residence where he reportedly ran inside." Fifty-seven year old Gerald Howard Gavette was cited for Careless Driving and Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver in a Property Crash.
Hit & Run
Two fled while another was left trapped under a rolled over black Ford XPL June 23, 7:55 p.m., during a single vehicle accident. According to an OSP report, the vehicle was "southbound when it swerved off the road and rolled over in the ditch coming to a rest on its side entrapping one of the occupants beneath the vehicle." The victim was transported to a hospital. The driver and right front passenger, 23-year old Donald Hathaway and 29-year old Cody John Hinkleyroy, were identified but not located.
The driver was not injured during a single vehicle accident on SR 42, near Howe Road, June 24, 7:51 a.m. According to an OSP report, 18-year old Diana Servin, Coquille, was westbound in a black Nissan Altima at a high rate of speed when she lost control and the vehicle rotated 180 degrees before leaving the roadway. It narrowly missed a utility pole, traveled down a steep embankment and crashed into a stick-built barn where it came to rest. The vehicle incurred heavy damage. She was cited for Failure to Drive Within Lane and warned for VBR and Careless Driving.
A 64-year old Bandon male was referred for a re-test of his driving privileges following a traffic stop on Hwy. 101, milepost 244, south of Coos Bay, June 24 at 10:30 a.m. According to an OSP report, a state trooper was dispatched to a report of a reckless driver, possibly DUII, being followed by an off duty police officer. Joel George Reday "appeared to be displaying a weapon during the incident, and was reported to having been throwing items out his vehicle." Reday was detained by the off duty officer after he pulled over on his own accord. Reday exhibited signs of impairment. "He consented to a search of his vehicle, in which I located hash and a smiling device; Mr. Reday has a Medical Marijuana Card." He was transported to the Coos County Jail at Coquille and consented to a Field Sobriety Test, which he failed. Reday was cited for DUII CS (Felony) and Reckless Driving. He was also referred on multiple counts of Recklessly Endangering Another.
A vehicle parked on the lawn near the entrance to Shore Acres State Park, southwest of Charleston, with an adult male passed out behind the steering wheel, led to a DUII arrest on June 24, 8:26 p.m. According to an OSP report, 38-year old Christopher Robert Phillips, Cornelius, OR, "was initially unresponsive, and when he was finally awakened, he smelled strongly of alcoholic beverages and was visibly impaired." He admitted and denied driving the vehicle. Phillips agreed to a Field Sobriety Test, but "was too impaired to complete the tests." An open container of alcohol and less than an ounce of marijuana was found in the vehicle. It was also discovered that his license was DWS Misdemeanor. He was transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille and the vehicle was towed.
A 31-year old male, who had a loaded firearm at his side, was stopped in a stolen vehicle on the Trans Pacific Hwy., north of North Bend, June 24, 9:24 p.m. According to an OSP report, a trooper observed the stolen vehicle on Hwy. 101, near milepost 226 and followed it for about six miles before activating emergency lights and siren. The white Toyota 4Runner reached speeds up to 80 mph before turning off the coastal route. With additional officers providing cover, a felony car stop was conducted. Gabriel Ryan Johnson was taken into custody without incident. The vehicle was later released to its 28-year old owner from Florence. Johnson was transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille and charged with Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle. He was also cited for several violation.
A 33-year old male, who "quickly left the scene of a traffic stop" June 13, 3:43 p.m., was located and taken into custody on a felony warrant. According to an OSP report, the white GMC Suburban was stopped in front of Jason Penland's Coquille residence. He was a passenger and found hiding in a shop adjacent to his residence. Penland was taken into custody without incident. A records check confirmed the felony warrant and he was transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille.
She admitted to "exceeding the posted speed, and failed to safely negotiate a curve," before her blue Ford Focus left the roadway. According to an OSP report, 27-year old Megan Melinda Schierman was unable to maintain control and the vehicle left the roadway to the eastbound shoulder. It continued down the roadside embankment, struck several large boulders, a tree stump and a tree. She was not injured, but the vehicle sustained massive front end and suspension damaged. She was warned for Failure to Drive Within Lane.
A pedestrian stopped for a violation June 15, 12:06 a.m., was arrested following a records check. According to an OSP report, 30-year old Thomas Bishop was found to have a valid arrest warrant out of Coos Co. A search of his person revealed him to be in possession of methamphetamine. He was transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille.
DWS & DUII
He left the scene, but was later stopped by a witness. According to an OSP report, an investigation revealed Joey Lee Spoon was the suspect driver of a white Dodge Caravan involved in a 12-16 on June 16, noon. He was DUII and DWS-Misdemeanor. "Multiple other charges will be referred."
An OSP trooper observed 65-year old Laurence William Hollingsworth driving a gray Chevrolet C/K on a public roadway, Colorado St., June 7, 4:54 p.m., and knew he had suspended driving privileges "due to a records check immediately prior to the stop." He reportedly "became confrontational and refused to obey lawful orders." Hollingsworth was detained and later advised he was being arrested for Failure to Carry and Present an operator's license. "Mr. Hollingsworth refused to give his date of birth and address initially, but later gave his date of birth. His vehicle was secured in a residential driveway." He was transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille, "where he was fingerprinted, photographed, and positively identified."
A newer model brown Honda SUV, stopped June 8, 12:08 a.m., for several traffic violations, led to the driver's arrest. According to an OSP report, the driver was identified as 45-year old Steven Christopher Whiteside, of Eugene. "A records check revealed that Mr. Whiteside was suspended at a Misdemeanor level." He was arrested and transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille.
